Police Chief Randy Fontenot say that 26-year-old Michael Rung was arrested on Friday following an investigation into the case.

Fontenot says officers responded to a report of a man being shot in the chest in the 200 block of Jelks Street early on Thursday, June 13.

During the investigation, Fontenot says that officers learned from Rung that he left his home around midnight and returned a short time later. Rung allegedly told police that upon his return he was approached by a man who he though was his friend Jacob.

Police say Rung told them that the man, who he didn’t recognize, raised a gun and demanded everything on him. Rung says he told the man he had nothing but the suspect searched and found his wallet.

After taking the wallet police say the man shot Rung in the chest.

In his statement to police, Rung allegedly said he had $800 in cash in his wallet at the time of the incident. Police say Rung was supposed to appear in court later that Thursday morning to pay back $798 in child support.

After further investigation police found that Rung had allegedly arranged for the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jacob L. Jack, to rob and shoot him so he would not have to appear in court with the money.

Rung was arrested and booked on charges of Criminal Conspiracy, Inciting a Felony, Principal to Aggravated Battery, Obstruction of Justice, Filing False Public Records and Perjury.

Jack was also arrested on Friday, June 28 on charges of Criminal Conspiracy, Inciting a Felony, Principal to Aggravated Battery, Obstruction of Justice, Filing False Public Records, Perjury and the additional charge of Illegal Carrying a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
